What Merdeka Means

Merdeka

"Same thing every year." That's what Wei Ming thinks about Merdeka. Flag raising, sing the anthem, everybody go home and eat — he's seen sixteen of these already.

But tonight his mum sends him off with a smile that lingers a second too long, and the group chat lights up: Akmad and Subra want him out. What starts as one more predictable celebration turns into a road trip from Melaka to Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur — for the lights of Citrawarna and the countdown to Independence.

Somewhere between the drive, the food, the old memories and the crowd, Wei Ming finally finds out if it really is "same thing every year."
